PAROMOMYCIN (Aminosidine, Humatin®) is an antibiotic, which will help reduce the symptoms of confusion associated with liver disease. Paromomycin is also used for the treatment of various intestinal infections. Generic paromomycin capsules are available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•bowel disease, or intestinal blockage (obstruction)
•difficulty hearing
•inflammatory bowel disease
•kidney disease
•myasthenia gravis
•Parkinson's disease
•ulcerative colitis
•an unusual or allergic reaction to paromomycin, other antibiotics, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine? (Back to top)
Take paromomycin capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take with a full glass of water with a meal. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course of capsules prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you feel better.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose? (Back to top)
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses without advice.

•amphotericin B
•carboplatin
•cidofovir
•cisplatin
•cyclosporine
•digoxin
•foscarnet
•ganciclovir
•methotrexate
•oral contraceptives (birth control pills)
•pamidronate
•tacrolimus
•warfarin
•zoledronic acid

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from using paromomycin? (Back to top)
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•difficulty hearing
•increased thirst
•pain or difficulty passing urine
•muscle weakness
•ringing in the ears or hearing loss
•skin rash, itching
•unusual tiredness or weakness

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•diarrhea
•dizziness
•headache
•nausea, vomiting

What should I watch for while taking paromomycin? (Back to top)
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve in a few days.

You may get dizzy or have trouble keeping your balance. Until you know how paromomycin affects you, do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires mental alertness.

Any loss or change in hearing should be reported to your physician immediately.

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 5—30 degrees C (41—86 degrees F). Avoid excessive heat above 40 degrees C (104 degrees F); do not freeze. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
